Nana Benz du Togo
This Afrobeat quintet named themselves after the businesswomen who are legendary in Togo and West Africa: the Nana Benz made a fortune in the 1950s to 1980s with colourful patterned “Dutch wax” fabrics from the Netherlands. Nana respectfully stands for ‘(grand)mother’ and Benz refers to Mercedes-Benz, whose limousines they could afford. Thus, the band pays tribute to the pioneers of female self-determination and economic independence. The lyrics address feminist and ecological issues. Their sound draws on Togolese voodoo traditions, combining call-and-response singing with synthesizers and 'Gazé Tuyau', a homemade bass made of PVC pipes that evokes house and techno music.
