It is 1969 in Cuba. Bass player Juan Formell forms a new band: Los Van Van. At root a very tight charanga ensemble – flute, violin, piano, percussion – Formell and the group’s percussionist Changuito quickly invent new changes in rhythm and timbre, introducing new elements such as rumba and funk. The result was a funky variant of son called songo played by a band that to this day remains at the top (and also the innovative edge) of Cuban dance music.
