Tarawangsa Rancakalong (IDO)
Tarawangsa Rancakalong (IDO)A tarawangsa is a two- or occasionally three-stringed bowed lute with a box-shaped neck, originating from the Sunda cultural region in West Java, Indonesia. It lends its name to a style of music characterized by a serene, minimalist approach. Tarawangsa music holds a significant place in traditional Sundanese culture, particularly within the realm of ritual music. It’s commonly played during religious ceremonies in many villages, often at Thanksgiving. This tradition, which goes back thousands of years, is mainly cultivated by the community in Rancakalong, West Java – which is also home to the Indonesian ensemble named after this instrument.
