THE OTHER LIGHT – ART FROM BURGENLAND
As part of the cultural partnership between Rudolstadt and Austria’s Burgenland region, Margit Fröhlich, Director of the Burgenland Provincial Museum, has curated an exhibition that showcases the region's cultural openness and artistic diversity. Historical photographs engage in a fascinating dialogue with modern and contemporary art.
Situated at the crossroads of several cultures, Burgenland has produced and attracted a wide variety of artistic voices over the decades. Shaped by distinctive landscapes and cultural exchange, the works on display reflect tradition and innovation, inviting visitors to discover Burgenland as an open, vibrant cultural region.
BURGENLAND: DISCOVER DIVERSITY
This photography exhibition invites visitors to discover Burgenland in all its facets – as a region brimming with joie de vivre, vibrant traditions and a distinctive way of life. Under the open sky, an atmospheric visual journey unfolds through rolling landscapes, impressive castles and palaces, and renowned festival venues. The photographs tell of living traditions, cultural diversity, and the wine and cuisine that characterise Burgenland. They capture tranquil moments in nature as well as the special atmosphere of grand stages and historic venues – thus painting a multifaceted picture of a region that balances relaxation and inspiration. The exhibition offers space to linger, to discover and to be inspired by the beauty and authenticity of Burgenland – and perhaps even to feel inspired to embark on a personal journey of discovery.
“Burgenland stands for quality of life, cultural diversity and a unique blend of nature, enjoyment and history. With this exhibition, we are bringing a piece of our culture to Rudolstadt and inviting visitors to experience Burgenland with all their senses.”
(Governor Hans Peter Doskozil)
Burgenland, Austria’s easternmost province, is characterised by a unique history and great cultural diversity. Long part of the Kingdom of Hungary, it has only belonged to Austria since 1921 – a past that is still reflected today in the region’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
Burgenland has developed from a once predominantly agricultural peripheral area into a modern and dynamic region. Viticulture, renewable energy and tourism now characterise the landscape – with rising numbers of overnight stays and growing popularity as a travel destination. This growth in tourism is also evident in the latest figures: in 2024, around 3.29 million overnight stays were recorded – a new record. This trend continued in 2025 with around 3.4 million overnight stays, marking another record year.
