The Congos & Culture
JAMWith The Congos and Culture, we are bringing two fixed stars of Jamaican roots reggae to the stage.
The Congos are still performing in their original line-up. And they are still authentic. Their concerts are characterised by Rastafarian beliefs, ultra-relaxed grooves and the falsetto voice of Cedric Myton contrasting with the baritone of Derrick ‘Watty’ Burnett. In 1977, they created a roots reggae milestone with producer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and their album ‘Heart of the Congos’. Numerous albums later, they remain enviably vital performers.
Culture also influenced the development of reggae with iconic songs. The album ‘Two Sevens Clash’ is unforgettable. However, there was a drastic change: frontman Joseph Hill passed away in 2006. His songs about dignity, poverty and faith offered political commentary as well as solace. The gap he left seemed difficult to fill. But his son Kenyatta took over the legacy — and was so convincing that he was quickly taken seriously as the band’s new voice.
The Congos & Culture feat. Kenyatta Hill are together in concert for the first time!
