Tenores di Orosei

ITA

The Tenores di Orosei are among the most impressive guardians of the Sardinian Cantu a Tenore. This polyphonic singing style is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage and has deep roots in the shepherding culture. It is said to date back more than 3,000 years, and its archaic appeal can still be felt in modern concert halls. The intertwining timbres create a powerful, deeply resonant effect. They are both earthy and sublime, sacred and physical. The singing is performed by four male voices: the oche as soloist, the mesu oche, the contra and the bassu. The Tenores di Orosei's repertoire ranges from ritual chants to secular songs. All these a cappella pieces are performed in the traditional stylistic codes of the Baronia region, where the 7,000-strong community of Orosei is located.
