Muslim Shaggan is one of Pakistan’s most noted classical vocalists of his generation. His grandfather is the vocal legend Ustad Ghulam Hassan Shaggan, who carefully prepared his grandson to carry on the family legacy. This legacy dates back to the 15th century, to an ancestor who, as a musician, accompanied the founder of the Sikh religion. As well as being a virtuoso in the khayal genre, which refers to the most important style of classical singing characterised by romantic lyrics and a high degree of freedom of improvisation, he has mastered a wide range of other styles. His singing is technically demanding yet full of emotion, and his musical experiments are rooted in traditional knowledge, though not bound by its strict methodology.
