This unique project is coming to Rudolstadt: in 2019, a Berlin big band, the ‘Omniversal Earkestra’, travelled to Mali. Their aim was to meet the ‘heroes’ of Mali music of the 1970s, which fuelled the West African scene at the time. This music was the original inspiration for the leMali70 project. After settling in a little in Bamako, the band followed the Niger River northwards to meet and perform with legendary musicians from Segou, Mopti and Timbuktu. The highlight of their journey was returning to Bamako in the company of many of the artists they had met. There they began recording in a makeshift studio. The resulting album is a tribute to a special period in Mali's rich musical history. There is also a film about it ‘LeMali70’.
