Idrîsî Ensemble

ENG+

Idrîsî was a famous scholar of the 12th century who left behind a revolutionary map of the then known world - there were no national borders. The Idrîsî ensemble performs medieval repertoire from ancient manuscripts as well as UNESCO-protected and endangered traditions. With a rare specialisation in ancient Roman chants, the Idrîsî Ensemble offers a unique insight into the vocal traditions of late antiquity. They sing the Mediterranean not as a boundary between different identities, but as a space of exchange, community and development. With their research in medieval literature, music archaeology and post-colonial historiography, they aim to complicate modern notions of identity and alterity.
