Siti Muharam and the Unguja All Stars (TAN)Zanzibar’s paramount musical style is taarab. It is an island music blending Qur’anic verse, East African polyrhythms and Indian melodicism. Early last century Siti Binti Saad transformed this formal court music sung in combined Arabic and Swahili lyrics, all laced together with the spirit of inclusivity. Almost a century later, Saad’s great-granddaughter Siti Muharam is building on, and adding to the family legacy. She is placing her stamp on taarab, reimagining this tradition, tending its flame, not minding its embers. Music brimming with romance, passion and protest.
