Pussy Riot

Pussy Riot (RUS)The Moscow-based feminist activist art collective Pussy Riot gained global notoriety after February 2012 when five balaclava’d canaries in the mine staged a ‘Punk Prayer’ guerrilla gig inside a Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Convictions, imprisonment, hunger strikes followed…generating international outcry. The documentary, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer(2013) told their story and their Maria (Masha) Alyokhina’s Riot Days (2016) is essential reading. Continually in a state of flux, their art of dissent lyrics address feminism, LGBTQ rights, censorship, opposition to Vladimir Putin, and the invasion of Ukraine are fanged-poetic, razor-sharp, outspoken, and incorrigibly witty. “Pussy Riot can be called a movement, not a group.” Alyokhina, Isthmus. Miss Pussy Riot at your peril.
